An Introduction to The News

I watched NBC News broadcast, June 12th 2019.(https://www.nbcnews.com/nightly-news/video/nightly-news-full-broadcast-june-12th-61805637868)
The Stories which were shown was a Murder, someone cheating in College, then Basketball. (in that order). In the starting sequence its loud and serious, but as it goes on it gets slower and less serious.

In the murder story, it was about a plot to kill some innocent civilians. The structure had a huge lead in with a picture of the attempted murderer, the main content was a video of the scene, and the final comments were that it was a bad thing mostly, this was done in this order to give the viewer the most clear and easy to understand way around what happened in the story. The only person involved in the story was the attempted murderer, and some unnamed civilians in the video. The attempted murderer was presented negatively, whereas the civilians as good, this is because in that situation the news team want people to feel sympathy for the victims and angry towards the gunman. I felt sympathy for all the people in the story because some were nearly killed and the attempted murderer is clearly unhappy which is why he done it. There wasn't any narrative.

The newsreader was a middle aged, middle/ upper class black man, there weren't any others; the reason he has all them qualities is because the news team want an authoritative person to talk to the viewers will listen and understand better. He addresses the audience as if he's talking to a large group of people, and not individually, this is so viewers realize this story will be known to everyone, and makes the viewer feel like the news reader is being less personal. His role is to make sense of the story to the viewer. The newsreader will require skills such as being able to cope with loads of voices in your ear, and being able to read text very well, this is because news workers will be speaking in their ear a lot telling them what to do, all while they read what they have to say. A field reporter reports the news while outside, most commonly done when an event is happening in a certain area outdoors because people will want to actually see the event the news team is talking about. Other people involved in a broadcast is a cameraman, mic holder and director.

The term news ordering means when they put certain stories in a certain order. Prospects List is the list of stories which will likely appear on the broadcast. The first story will always likely be the most serious and saddening, this is done so that they get the bad news outta the way first, then focus on more positive news, plus it interests the viewer if it's sad first. The ability to think and act quickly is very important when working for the News, for example the cameramen need to be able to think of the location they're going to and how it looks very quickly. A slow news day means that there isn't going to be much news, and that nothing particularly note worth has happened. The final story on the news is always usually meant to be positive and make people happy, so it ends in a high note. The term News Values means what the News story has on the viewers, and if it is impactful to them in any way, Galtung and Ruge made the Value. Actuality footage is the footage that the news team use for the News channel, whereas the stock footage is just the footage that gets sent before it has been edited and worked with.
